FAQ

Do you need a fishing license in the Stockholm archipelago?

No. The entire Swedish coast and the five big inland lakes (including Mälaren) are free for handheld sport fishing. You don't need a permit for rod, jig or bait fishing in the Stockholm archipelago or in central Stockholm.

What fish species live in the Stockholm archipelago?

Pike and perch dominate. The brackish inner archipelago also holds zander, whitefish and sea-trout. Further out toward the open Baltic you can catch mackerel, cod and flatfish.

When is the best time to fish the archipelago?

The April-May spring run is the prime window for trophy pike in shallow bays. Sea-trout peaks in early spring and late autumn. Zander runs on summer evenings (July-August). Ice fishing is possible when safe ice forms.

Where can you fish for pike in the Stockholm archipelago?

Sheltered bays in the middle and outer archipelago — Värmdö, Ingarö, Möja and Norrtälje/Roslagen are classic pike grounds. Vaxholm is easy to reach by public transport.

Where do you fish for sea-trout around Stockholm?

The coast south of Nynäshamn, Mysingen and Landsort is productive. Värmdö and Ingarö also give good shore chances from rocky stretches. Early spring and late autumn are best.
